Moyes aims to seize chance

Manchester United manager David Moyes

David Moyes says that his Manchester United side will be working hard to close the gap to the top of the Barclays Premier League.

The champions face Aston Villa on Sunday and are eyeing a move up the table, currently headed by Arsenal, in a busy programme over the rest of this month.

The boss is confident that the depth of talent available to him in the United squad can build on the encouragement brought by the win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday that sealed first place in Champions League Group A.

“We see it as an opportunity. We have got a long way to go and we have to try to make sure we only take one game at a time,” said Moyes. “Football is like that anyway, we can only take it one game at a time and see what happens later in the season. I can't talk about it now, we're too far away from it but we'll do everything possible to get closer [to the top].

“We want to play well. We've not done as well in the league as we should have done but we're working hard to try to put it right. The quality of players we have got here gives us a chance to do that and hopefully that will be the case.

“There were a lot of games we were expected to win before but this club is expected to win all its games. That's the fact and why, if we lose one or two, things get said. I totally understand that. When I came here, I knew that was the situation. We've got a lot of games coming up where we can pick up points, but what we need to do is not talk about it and make it happen on the field.”
